The Goethe-Institut's B2 oral exam is an internationally recognized certification of advanced German language skills. It is aimed at individuals who wish to communicate confidently in private, professional, or academic settings. This exam assesses the ability to express oneself clearly, coherently, and flexibly on more complex topics in German.
The focus of this exam is communication. Participants must demonstrate that they can express their opinions, respond to others, and present arguments in a structured way. The exam simulates conversation scenarios that occur in everyday life, academic studies, or the workplace.
The B2 speaking exam is especially relevant for the following groups:
It is also beneficial for those who want to improve their language skills or prepare for professional life in a German-speaking environment.
The purpose is not just to obtain a certificate. The goal is to prove one's ability to communicate orally in different contexts. The exam tests not only linguistic accuracy but also whether candidates can react flexibly and understandably in real dialogue situations.
The speaking exam is usually conducted in pairs and lasts about 15 minutes per person. It consists of two main parts:
A preparation time of about 10 minutes is provided, during which notes may be taken. The interaction should feel authentic and prepare participants for real conversation situations.
Unlike the B1 level exam, which focuses primarily on basic language functions (e.g., asking questions, giving personal information), the B2 exam requires more: structured argumentation, justification of opinions, spontaneous reactions to opposing arguments, and a higher degree of conversation management. Greater attention is also paid to linguistic accuracy and the variety of expressions used.
The evaluation is carried out by two trained examiners based on transparent criteria. The following aspects are assessed:
The exam is considered passed if at least 60 percent of the available points are achieved. The results are combined with those of the other parts of the exam.
Olena, the founder of this learning platform, has been guiding learners from over 40 countries toward their successful German exams for more than 15 years. In close collaboration with native-speaking examiners and teachers from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and beyond, she develops targeted speaking practice exercises. "With the Goethe B2 exam, it's not just about knowing the right vocabulary," she explains. "What matters most is being able to communicate confidently and naturally in real conversations – with structure and content." Her exercises help learners practice conversation phases, use pauses wisely, and systematically avoid common mistakes.
Language teaching expert Anna Kovács emphasizes that “the key to passing is not memorization, but the ability to engage spontaneously with changing topics.” She recommends practicing regularly with a partner and asking for honest feedback.
Our participant Luca from Milan writes: “At first I was very nervous about the speaking part, but the online exercises helped me express my opinions clearly – and even enjoy discussing.” Nilüfer from Istanbul adds: “The examples felt realistic and helped me truly understand the exam situation.”
