The ÖIF A1 exam is a standardized language test for people who are just beginning to learn German. It serves as an official certificate of basic language skills and is often a requirement in Austria for obtaining a first residence permit or for integration measures.
This exam tests whether you can understand, speak, read, and write simple sentences in everyday situations. It includes introducing yourself, having short conversations about family or daily life, and understanding basic information in texts or conversations.
This test is especially necessary for individuals moving to Austria – for example, as part of family reunification. Proof of A1-level language skills is also often required when applying for a visa or in the context of integration agreements.
In many cases, the exam is legally required. It demonstrates that a person has basic language knowledge needed to navigate daily life in a German-speaking environment. For many, it is the first step toward long-term integration in Austria.
The ÖIF A1 exam consists of several parts that assess different language skills:
The full exam takes about 80 to 90 minutes. The speaking part may take place on the same day or separately, depending on the test center.
Compared to the A2 exam, the A1 level is significantly easier. At A1, the focus is on understanding and using fixed phrases, single words, and short sentences. The A2 exam already requires simple conversations, a wider vocabulary, and the ability to write longer texts. The listening and reading sections are also more extensive at the A2 level.
Evaluation is conducted centrally according to the Austrian Integration Fund's criteria. To pass, participants must score at least 60 out of 100 points. It is important to succeed in both the written and oral parts.
Olena, the founder of this platform, has years of experience in preparing learners for German exams. She develops targeted practice materials in collaboration with German teachers and examiners from various countries. Her advice: "Prepare using authentic task formats – especially listening comprehension and role-playing are essential. Those who rehearse the exam situation in advance feel more confident and have a higher chance of passing."
German trainer Anna L. from Vienna adds: "Many candidates underestimate the speaking part. Actively practicing simple conversational structures beforehand helps enormously." A former test participant says: "The interactive online preparation helped me improve my weaknesses and understand exactly what to expect."
The ÖIF A1 exam is an important first step for many who want to start a new life in Austria. With realistic tasks, clear learning goals, and systematic preparation, passing is very achievable – even for complete beginners.
Jewgenija Mamchur: „I am very glad that I found this website one month before my exam — exactly when I was ready to prepare seriously. During this time, I completed almost all exercises in every category, carefully analyzed my mistakes, and read the explanations. And how surprised I was when about 60% of the exam tasks came directly from this site! I was happy because I already knew them and even remembered most of the correct answers. A big advantage for me was that I could easily translate the tasks and answers into my native language, which made understanding much easier. This website is perfect for preparation — highly recommended!“
Sara El Mounjali: „Good service“
