Preparation for DTZ B1 Exam (German Test for Immigrants)

Your DTZ B1 Exam in Detail

The DTZ B1 exam – officially known as the “German Test for Immigrants” – is an important milestone for many people who want to live permanently in a German-speaking country or have already arrived. It was developed specifically within the framework of integration courses and aims to assess the linguistic ability of immigrants in everyday situations. The exam is mainly conducted in Germany, but it is also available in selected institutions in Austria or Luxembourg when integration is involved.

What is the purpose of the DTZ?

The DTZ was designed for people who wish to live in a German-speaking country and actively participate in society. It serves as an official language certificate:

  • for naturalization in Germany
  • as the final exam of an integration course
  • for job applications or access to vocational training
  • as a general orientation in everyday German life

Who is required to take the exam?

The primary target group includes immigrants enrolled in an integration course. In most cases, people applying for German citizenship also need to present a B1 level certificate. The test is also open to voluntary participants.

Structure and content of the DTZ

The exam is divided into two main sections: Listening/Reading and Writing (written part), as well as Speaking (oral part). The goal is to assess whether candidates can cope with everyday communication in German.

Components of the exam

  • Listening: Understanding conversations, interviews, announcements or radio clips
  • Reading: Comprehending emails, forms, short articles and advertisements
  • Writing: Responding to messages and composing a short letter or email
  • Speaking: Partner conversation, introducing oneself, expressing opinions, discussing everyday topics

Duration of the exam

The total time is about 100 minutes for the written part, plus the oral section:

  • Listening/Reading: approx. 60 minutes
  • Writing: approx. 30 minutes
  • Speaking: approx. 15 minutes, usually in pairs

How is the exam assessed?

The written part is corrected anonymously by certified examiners. The oral part is evaluated on-site by two specially trained assessors. The assessment is based on clear criteria such as comprehensibility, appropriate language use and structure.

Passing requirements

To pass the DTZ and reach B1 level, candidates must achieve at least 60% in both the written and oral sections. If only A2 level is reached, participants still receive an official certificate stating this level. Results are typically available within two to three weeks.
