Info about Giving a Presentation in the Goethe B2 Speaking Exam

What is it all about?

In the first part of the speaking exam, you choose one of two suggested topics and present your ideas in about four minutes. The aim is to speak fluently, follow a clear structure, and respond to a few questions from your partner afterwards.

The process in three steps

  • 15 minutes of individual preparation using notes (no external aids).
  • Free presentation without reading – introduction, main points, conclusion.
  • Short follow-up conversation: answer and ask questions.

A structure that works

  • Introduction: Grab attention, introduce the topic.
  • Main part: Present two or three key arguments with examples.
  • Conclusion: Summarize and ask an open question to your listener.

Common topic areas

Examiners often choose subjects from everyday life, work or society: sustainable living, flexible jobs, digital education, health while traveling, or intercultural experience.

Assessment criteria

  • Relevance: Clear and appropriate content.
  • Structure: Logical flow and organization.
  • Language: Grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary.
  • Interaction: Listening skills and suitable responses.

Expert tip from Olena

Olena – linguist, founder of this platform, and long-time coach for international learners – develops all exercises together with teachers and examiners from five continents. Her advice:

“During your preparation, write down only keywords for the introduction, each main idea, and your final sentence. Use linking phrases like ‘firstly’, ‘moreover’, ‘in conclusion’. That helps you stay natural and well-structured.”

More voices from experience

  • Examiner Dr. Fabian K. (Cologne): A clear structure is more valuable than rare vocabulary.
  • Former candidate Sara V.: A weekly four-minute video log really improved my timing.
  • Coach Pablo S.: End with a smile and an open question – it's the perfect transition to dialogue.

Quick prep before your exam day

  • Use a timer and record three trial speeches.
  • Create flashcards with phrases for openings and closings.
  • Practice answering questions about your speech with a tandem partner.
  • After each recording, mark what was clear and where transitions were missing.

By following these steps, you'll approach the exam with confidence, demonstrate authentic spoken German, and meet the current assessment standards with ease.

Experiences of our users

*All reviews are genuine and authentic – you can read them in the Google reviews of our platform.

Nataliia Kh: „I was lucky to come across this website filled with so much useful content for exam preparation. New tasks are constantly being added, and using the platform is very affordable – you can prepare for a small fee. The section for note-taking practice for the B2 exam is especially helpful. I haven't seen such an interesting format for note-writing in any textbook. Many thanks for this brilliant idea!“

Ebru Bingöl: „I strongly recommend it. You don’t need to buy an expensive course. The best preparation is with BO.“

Lucianna Silva: „I discovered this website three weeks before my B2 exam and can only say that it was absolutely worth it. If I had found it five months earlier, I would have passed the exam for sure. It is really worth studying here and doing as many exercises as possible, because on the exam day you will find exactly the same structure. I would like to sincerely thank the excellent teacher Olena.“
