What You Need to Know About the ÖIF B1 Exam

The ÖIF B1 exam is a standardized language test that assesses German language skills at the B1 level. Developed by the Austrian Integration Fund, this test is primarily aimed at immigrants who want to demonstrate their language integration in Austria. In addition to Austria, the exam is also offered at certified test centers abroad – for example, in countries with large Austrian communities or officially recognized educational institutions.

What is the structure of the exam?

The exam follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The tasks cover all key language skills and are based on real-life situations from daily and professional life.

Overview of the exam parts

  • Reading: Understanding texts such as ads, notices, or short articles
  • Listening: Comprehension of conversations, interviews, or announcements
  • Writing: Composing simple letters or official requests
  • Speaking: Expressing opinions, discussing personal topics, planning together

Duration and procedure

The written parts of the exam take about 140 minutes. The speaking part is conducted separately and usually lasts 15 to 20 minutes. It is typically done in pairs.

Who evaluates the exam?

The written parts are centrally graded by the ÖIF. The speaking section is assessed locally by certified examiners. All evaluations follow clear and standardized criteria.

What score do you need to pass?

Each part must be passed with at least 60%. If one part is failed, it can be retaken. The certificate is generally valid indefinitely.
