The B1-level exam is an internationally recognized certification of basic proficiency in the German language. The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is intended for learners who want to document their language skills for everyday life, work, or official purposes. This exam is organized by the Goethe-Institut and is offered in over 90 countries worldwide – including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Canada, Brazil, and many other nations with German-language educational institutions.

The entire exam is standardized and consists of multiple parts, each covering different language skills. The requirements correspond to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
The total exam time is approximately 180 minutes:
The written sections are evaluated centrally. The speaking part is assessed on site by specially trained examiners. The evaluation follows clearly defined criteria, focusing not only on linguistic accuracy but also on structure, clarity, and communicative effectiveness.
To pass, each section of the exam must be completed with at least 60%. Results are typically available within 2 to 4 weeks. The Goethe B1 certificate is valid indefinitely.
