Detailed Information on the Goethe B2 Writing Exam

What does the written exam at B2 level involve?

Written expression is a central component of the Goethe B2 certificate. This task requires candidates to present their opinion on a societal or everyday topic in a structured text. The goal is to compose a coherent response with a clear line of argumentation, while meeting linguistic and content-related criteria.

What is the purpose of this exam part?

The writing section proves that candidates can convey a message clearly, logically, and appropriately in writing without direct communication. It demonstrates the ability to deal with complex content at B2 level. The Goethe B2 certificate is widely accepted for study, employment, and immigration and serves as reliable proof of advanced language proficiency.

Strengths and possible challenges

  • Authentic writing topics with real-world relevance
  • Targeted preparation with topic-specific exercises and examples
  • Free choice of emphasis – opinion, structure, and argumentation

Some participants find the following aspects demanding:

  • Limited time for planning and writing
  • Organizing thoughts clearly while writing spontaneously
  • Expectations for varied and precise language use

How is the Goethe B2 writing task structured?

Candidates write a text of approximately 180 to 200 words on a given topic. Topics are often related to work, media, education, or social life. Before writing, a short opinion from another person is provided, which should be addressed in the response. The structure should include an introduction, main part with arguments, and a clear conclusion.

How much time is available?

The writing task is part of a 75-minute section that also includes reading comprehension. In practice, around 30 to 35 minutes are available for writing. Time management and a clear writing strategy are therefore essential.

How is the writing evaluated?

Evaluation is based on set criteria: completeness, coherence, grammatical accuracy, vocabulary range, and overall cohesion. Writing skills, spelling, and grammar all influence the final score, which contributes to the total exam result.

What score is needed to pass?

To pass the B2 level Goethe exam, a minimum of 60 out of 100 total points is required. The writing section plays an important role and weak performance in this part can only be partially compensated by better results in other sections.

How can candidates best prepare?

Effective preparation depends on consistent writing practice and feedback. Recommended strategies include:

  • Writing on current topics from everyday or social contexts
  • Analyzing sample texts – what makes a strong answer?
  • Training with online exercises, including example solutions and explanations
  • Using vocabulary lists and structured phrase templates

It is also helpful to complete tasks under real exam conditions – with time limits and without correction aids.

Expert tip from Olena and other professionals

Our platform was created by Olena Bazalukova, a language expert with over 20 years of experience in exam preparation. In close collaboration with teachers and examiners from Germany, Austria, Canada, and Switzerland, she designs digital content tailored to official requirements while supporting learners effectively.

Olena explains: “Many underestimate this part. Writing is not an instinctive process, but a structured task. If you know the format and practice regularly, you'll build confidence in content, length, and expression.”

Language trainer Markus Held adds: “The most important skill is learning how to argue logically – not just in German, but with clear reasoning. Weaknesses are often in structure, not language.”

One user wrote: “I learned step by step how to structure a topic. The writing frameworks and example sentences on the platform were especially helpful.”

The Goethe B2 writing exam demands more than grammar knowledge. Those who practice regularly with real topics, refine their style, and write with structure significantly increase their chances of success. Our online exercises with examples, explanations, and strategic guidance provide ideal preparation for this part of the German test.

Experiences of our users

*All reviews are genuine and authentic – you can read them in the Google reviews of our platform.

Lucianna Silva: „I discovered this website three weeks before my B2 exam and can only say that it was absolutely worth it. If I had found it five months earlier, I would have passed the exam for sure. It is really worth studying here and doing as many exercises as possible, because on the exam day you will find exactly the same structure. I would like to sincerely thank the excellent teacher Olena.“

Jewgenija Mamchur: „I am very glad that I found this website one month before my exam — exactly when I was ready to prepare seriously. During this time, I completed almost all exercises in every category, carefully analyzed my mistakes, and read the explanations. And how surprised I was when about 60% of the exam tasks came directly from this site! I was happy because I already knew them and even remembered most of the correct answers. A big advantage for me was that I could easily translate the tasks and answers into my native language, which made understanding much easier. This website is perfect for preparation — highly recommended!“

sonLION: „The website (BO Vorbereitung) helped me a lot. It contains many writing examples. I recommend studying the parts that never change in complaint letters, requests, or forum posts so that you can reuse them in many other contexts.“
