Your Goethe B2 Reading Exam in Detail

The reading exam at B2 level is a core component of the Goethe Certificate and assesses whether candidates can understand and accurately interpret challenging German-language texts. This exam is offered worldwide by the Goethe-Institut and serves as an officially recognized proof of advanced language skills in German as a foreign language.

What is the purpose of this exam?

The B2 reading test aims to assess reading comprehension in realistic situations. It focuses on the ability to navigate written information confidently and precisely in everyday life, work, or academic contexts. The Goethe B2 exam is often required for:

  • university admission or preparation for academic studies
  • job applications at German-speaking companies
  • language proof for immigration or visa applications
  • professional or language development purposes

Advantages and possible challenges

One major advantage of the Goethe B2 reading exam is its international recognition. It opens doors to education and career opportunities and is accepted by many institutions. The structured format provides clear orientation for preparation. A challenge may be the variety of text types and the time pressure. Only those who master various reading strategies can respond confidently under exam conditions.

How is the exam structured?

The reading section consists of four tasks. It includes texts from various sources such as newspapers, websites, forms, or emails. The tasks test global, detailed, and selective understanding.

  • Part 1: Several short texts and matching statements
  • Part 2: A longer journalistic text with multiple-choice questions
  • Part 3: A formal information text (e.g. guidelines) with an assignment task
  • Part 4: A combined task focused on detail comprehension

Duration of the B2 reading exam

The reading part lasts a total of 65 minutes. It is completed either on paper or in a digital format, depending on the test center. All four tasks must be completed within this time frame without breaks.

Assessment and passing criteria

Answers are scored centrally using a standardized assessment system. Each correct answer earns points, with some questions weighted more heavily than others. To pass, candidates must score at least 60 percent of the total possible points in the reading section. The result contributes to the overall certificate together with the other exam components.
