Preparation for Problem Solving (Dialogue) in the Telc B2 Exam

Why this part of the exam matters

In the second half of the oral B2 exam, you will take part in a short scenario where two candidates discuss a work-related problem. The goal is to analyze the situation objectively, exchange ideas, and agree on a solution — all within a few minutes. This task shows whether you can communicate in German cooperatively, not just linguistically.

Structure in three stages

  1. Understanding the topic – both partners read the scenario silently and highlight the key points.
  2. Exchange – you discuss suggestions, weigh pros and cons, and look for common ground.
  3. Decision – you summarize the outcome in one or two sentences and propose a next step.

Typical topic areas

  • Customer complaint due to delayed delivery
  • Conflict about vacation scheduling within a team
  • Broken office equipment and time pressure in a project
  • Disagreement about an event’s budget

What affects the evaluation

  • Clarity of your arguments and questions
  • Response to your partner, including listening skills
  • Logical structure rather than jumping between ideas
  • Polite language and a goal-oriented conclusion

Useful expressions that often help

  • "What do you see as the key point in this matter?"
  • "One possible compromise could be …"
  • "I understand your point, but perhaps we could …"
  • "Let’s briefly summarize what we’ve agreed on."

Expert tip from Olena

Olena, founder of this platform, develops all materials in collaboration with teachers and certified examiners from Europe, North America, and Asia. Her advice: “Never enter the discussion with a memorized speech. Instead, prepare two keywords per idea. This keeps you flexible, allows you to ask questions, and helps you sound natural in dialogue.”

Additional insights from professionals

  • Dr. Elisa Baumann (examiner): A clearly phrased question to your partner signals cooperation and improves your score.
  • Karim Aydın (coach): Anyone who suggests a realistic next step at the end shows actual problem-solving skills — not just criticism.

Feedback from past participants

  • “The short exercises with role cards helped expand my vocabulary.” – Lara, event manager
  • “An example from my work life helped me stay calm.” – Jonas, technician

Mini exercise for home practice

Choose a common topic — for example, “Noise in an open-plan office.” Write down three possible causes and three solutions as bullet points, then simulate the dialogue aloud in front of a mirror: question–answer–agreement. This way, you train both your argumentation and time management.

A strong problem-solving dialogue depends on clear thinking, real-life examples, and respect for your partner’s opinions. Those who combine these elements and regularly practice short tasks will enter the Telc dialogue confidently — and earn valuable points in the exam.
