All Details About the Discussion (Small Talk) in the Oral Part of the Telc B2 Exam

What to expect in this task

In the first part of the Telc B2 oral exam, you will have a short conversation with another candidate – this is known as a small talk situation. It’s not about expert knowledge, but rather about communicating spontaneously and appropriately in a professional or social context. The goal is to hold a natural, polite conversation – just like an informal chat at the workplace.

Time frame and structure

  • Preparation time: approx. 20 minutes
  • Conversation duration: approx. 5–6 minutes
  • The exam usually takes place with a partner candidate

How does the discussion proceed?

  1. Greeting and introduction: You briefly introduce yourself and start the conversation in a friendly way.
  2. Conversation flow: You discuss a current or general topic from everyday or work life together.
  3. Conclusion: You politely end the conversation and express openness for further exchange.

Example topics for the discussion

  • Four-day workweek: sensible or unrealistic?
  • Home office and flexible working hours
  • Healthy eating at the workplace
  • How to build good team spirit?
  • Technology in everyday work – blessing or curse?

What is assessed?

  • Clarity and pronunciation
  • Fluency and response to your partner
  • Appropriate word choice and conversation strategies
  • Dialogue skills and politeness

Helpful phrases for a successful conversation

  • “What do you think about …?”
  • “I see it similarly, because …”
  • “I disagree with that, because …”
  • “Perhaps we should also consider that …”
  • “Thank you for the conversation, it was very interesting.”

Expert tip from Olena

Our expert Olena, founder of this platform, develops all exercises in collaboration with experienced teachers and certified Telc examiners from over 10 countries. She emphasizes: “Small talk may seem easy, but preparation is key. Practice with real-life work topics, listen actively, and use clear and simple sentences. That’s how you appear authentic – and that earns points.”

Additional tips from practice

  • Speak aloud regularly about everyday topics – it improves your fluency.
  • Use role plays with a study partner or online training tools.
  • Prepare keywords instead of full sentences – this keeps you flexible.

Practice task

Imagine: You’re new at a company. A colleague talks to you during a coffee break. You discuss the topic “Healthy lunch breaks at the office.” What do you say? How do you start the conversation? What’s your opinion?

Small talk is more than just casual chatting – it demonstrates your spontaneous communication skills at B2 level. Those who practice with a variety of topics, know helpful phrases, and stay polite have the best chances of receiving a strong evaluation in this exam section.
