German B2 Reading exam

Reading is a key part of B2 German exams, but the exact format, timing and scoring depend on the exam you choose.

At B2 level, you are expected to understand more than the general meaning of a text. Reading tasks may require you to identify key information, important details, opinions, viewpoints and connections between ideas.

The role of the Reading section also differs between exams. In the Goethe-Zertifikat B2, Reading is a separate module, while in telc Deutsch B2 and Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2 it forms part of a broader examination structure.

That is why effective preparation starts with knowing exactly which exam you are planning to take.

B2 reading tasks are designed for learners preparing for an official German exam at B2 level.

Depending on the exam provider and the requirements of the institution requesting proof of your German skills, a B2 certificate may be used for employment, education or other official purposes.

Before registering for an exam, it is worth checking which certificate and level are accepted by the employer, university or authority you need to submit it to.

At B2 level, reading is not just about understanding individual words or finding one obvious fact.

You may need to:

• identify the main information in a text;
• understand important details;
• recognise opinions and viewpoints;
• understand relationships between different parts of a text;
• work with texts from everyday, public or professional contexts.

The exact task types depend on the examination format, so it is important to practise with materials that reflect the structure of your chosen exam.

There is no single duration for all B2 German Reading exams.

In the Goethe-Zertifikat B2, the Reading module consists of five parts and takes 65 minutes.

In telc Deutsch B2, Reading consists of three parts. It is completed together with two Language Elements sections within a 90-minute written examination block.

In the Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2, Reading consists of four parts and takes 45 minutes. There is also an additional 20-minute integrated Reading and Writing task.

These differences matter during preparation. A general B2 reading exercise may help improve your German, but it may not reflect the exact number of tasks, time limits or structure of the exam you plan to take.

Reading tasks are usually assessed through correct and incorrect answers rather than the qualitative criteria used for productive skills such as writing or speaking.

The exact scoring system depends on the examination.

Some exams also combine reading with another skill. For example, the Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2 includes an integrated Reading and Writing task.

This means that preparation should focus not only on understanding texts, but also on completing the required tasks accurately and within the available time.

Passing rules are different for each examination.

In the Goethe-Zertifikat B2, Reading is a separate module and is passed with at least 60 out of 100 points.

In telc Deutsch B2, Reading is part of the written examination and does not have its own separate 60% pass requirement. Candidates need to achieve at least 60% in the written examination as a whole and at least 60% in the oral examination.

In the Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2, Reading accounts for 25% of the total score, while the overall passing rules apply to the examination as a whole.

For this reason, it is important not to apply the scoring rules of one B2 exam to another.

The time needed to receive your results depends on the exam provider and the examination centre.

For telc, results may take approximately four to six weeks, depending on the number of examinations being processed.

For Goethe examinations, publication times vary between institutes and examination partners. Candidates should therefore check the information provided by their own examination centre.

One of the main difficulties at B2 level is managing several tasks at the same time: understanding the text, identifying relevant information and working within a limited amount of time.

You may understand most of a text and still lose points if you overlook an important detail, misread the writer’s opinion or spend too long on one question.

Another challenge is that different texts require different reading strategies. Some tasks focus on the main message, while others require careful attention to specific details or connections between ideas.

This is why exam preparation should train both reading comprehension and time management.

Regular reading practice is useful, but exam preparation is more effective when it is combined with tasks that match the format of your chosen examination.

Useful preparation methods include:

• practising with different text types;
• working with official model tests;
• completing exam-style tasks under realistic time limits;
• reviewing mistakes after each practice session;
• learning to identify which information in a text is relevant to the question.

When reviewing a mistake, do not only check the correct answer. Go back to the text and identify what caused the problem: a missed detail, an unfamiliar phrase, a misunderstood opinion or incorrect time management.

This makes each exercise more useful for future tasks.

Online preparation can be a flexible way to practise at home, while commuting or alongside work and study.

It also makes it easier to repeat difficult task types, analyse mistakes and practise working within time limits.

However, not every exercise labelled “B2 Reading” follows the exact format of Goethe, telc or Deutsch-Test für den Beruf.

For the most reliable preparation, use exercises that match your specific examination and combine them with official model tests and regular reading practice. This will help you become familiar not only with B2-level German texts, but also with the task types, timing and structure you will face on exam day.
