All Details About the ÖIF B1 Speaking Exam

The oral language exam at B1 level is a central component of the integration test conducted by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF). It aims to assess whether candidates can communicate appropriately in typical everyday situations. The focus is not on memorized phrases but on a natural and structured use of language.

Who needs this certification?

This exam is primarily intended for people who plan to stay in Austria long-term, apply for a residence permit extension, or pursue Austrian citizenship. It is also recognized by many public authorities and employers. Since the ÖIF test is officially accredited, it is available not only in Austria but also at selected testing centers abroad.

How does the oral exam work?

The exam is usually conducted as a paired conversation and lasts about 15 minutes per pair. It consists of three parts:

  • Introducing oneself and speaking freely about everyday topics
  • Planning an everyday situation together, such as a meeting, celebration, or shopping
  • Expressing an opinion and responding to the partner’s opinion

Before the conversation, there is a short preparation phase during which candidates can review the tasks.

What is assessed?

The evaluation is based on clearly defined criteria. It's not only about grammar but also about communicative flexibility, interaction, and clarity. The key criteria include:

  • linguistic accuracy and expression
  • appropriate vocabulary
  • active conversation management
  • response to the partner
  • fluent and coherent speech

To officially reach B1 level, candidates must achieve sufficient scores in both the oral and written parts of the test.

Expert tip from Olena

Olena, the founder of this platform, specializes in practical preparation for oral language exams. Her exercises are developed in collaboration with certified examiners and teachers from Austria, Germany, Turkey, Ukraine, and other countries. She places great emphasis on authentic topics, clear structures, and realistic dialogues. Her advice: “Don’t just use examples — practice full dialogues with real questions, answers, opinions, and spontaneous reactions.”

Additional perspectives from professionals

Language coach Nadja G. from Vienna says: “The biggest challenge is often the fear of spontaneous speaking. Those who regularly practice real conversations quickly overcome this insecurity.” Language didactics expert Dr. Julian E. adds: “You can only learn to speak by speaking — not through books alone.”

Feedback from participants

A candidate from Linz shared: “I didn’t know how to start, but the simulated practice tasks on this platform prepared me effectively.” A learner from Graz adds: “The sentence starters and phrases for expressing opinions and planning were particularly helpful.”

Tips for effective preparation

  • Practice regular conversations with a learning partner
  • Discuss current and everyday topics
  • Memorize and use speaking phrases flexibly
  • Record your speech and analyze your performance
  • Simulate the exam under time constraints

The ÖIF B1 Speaking Exam does not require perfection — it assesses how confidently you can use German in everyday situations. With targeted preparation, a clear approach, and practical examples, you can take the exam with confidence.
