The written language exam in the area of writing is a central component of the official Deutsch B1 test by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF). It is intended for anyone who needs recognized proof of their written German language skills at level B1 – for example, for permanent residence, citizenship, or professional recognition procedures in Austria.
The focus is on the ability to write clearly, structurally, and appropriately in German. It’s not just about grammatical accuracy but also about meaningful written communication – whether in the form of a letter, a complaint, or a personal opinion. The exam reflects real-life situations and prepares participants for authentic written interaction.
The ÖIF B1 writing exam is primarily intended for immigrants in Austria, but also for people who want to document their language skills – for example, in the workplace or when applying for education programs. The exam can be taken as part of an integration course or independently as a standalone test.
The written part of the test consists of two tasks:
The two tasks cover different writing situations – which is an advantage, as they assess different linguistic registers and communication skills.
The allotted time for the written production is 25 minutes. Both tasks must be fully completed during this period. The exam is considered passed if at least 50 percent of the total points are achieved. The evaluation includes the following criteria:
Examiners pay close attention to whether the text fits the situation, whether the writing style is appropriate, and whether the task was properly understood and addressed. In addition to correct language usage, they also evaluate whether the participant is able to communicate realistically in writing.
Olena Bazalukova, the founder of this platform, has been supporting German learners for many years on their way to successful certification. She develops all exercises in close cooperation with experienced teachers and certified examiners – not only from Germany and Austria, but also from Switzerland, Poland, Ukraine, and Turkey. She places special emphasis on realistic topics, authentic examples, and clearly structured practice materials. Her long-standing experience shows: Those who train regularly with targeted tasks not only improve their written German, but also gain confidence for the actual exam situation.
Many users report feeling better prepared for the exam thanks to the structured practice. Exercises with solutions that simulate real test scenarios are especially appreciated. One participant from Linz wrote: "Before the exam, I had never written a formal letter in German. Thanks to this platform, I learned step by step how to do it – and passed."
To prepare effectively for the ÖIF B1 writing exam, it is recommended to:
An online format with interactive exercises can be especially helpful, as it is accessible from anywhere and available at any time.
The writing exam is more than just a grammar test – it requires the targeted use of language tools to solve concrete communication tasks. Those who practice with realistic exercises not only develop a better feeling for the language, but also the necessary routine for the exam. The focused use of current topics, practical examples, and supportive materials offers a clear advantage.
Agnieszka Strzelczyk: „German can be a challenge, but with this platform everything looks much easier. I’m satisfied because I can improve my speaking, writing and listening skills. A very helpful website for German learners.“
Anna Chin: „Hello, from August to October I prepared for the B1 exam with Olena. As a result, I passed the exam and received my B1 certificate. I would like to say that the training with Olena gave me more knowledge than the courses, because during those months my listening, reading, and writing skills improved noticeably. Speaking, of course, depends on vocabulary, but we practiced dialogues and naturally spoke more together as well.“
Vika Boyarshinova: „Very good and practical website. There are plenty of materials for exam preparation. I studied with Olena in online lessons, and it really helped me pass the exam and get the B1 certificate. I would say it played a key role. Olena is one of the few who truly cares about us – she genuinely helps with her knowledge and advice. She explains even the most difficult grammar in simple words, and everything becomes clear.“
