The Telc A2 Reading Exam is an integral part of the written component of the German A2 language test. The goal of this exam is to assess whether participants can understand simple written information from everyday life – such as notices, short articles or personal messages. Reading comprehension is one of the most essential foundations on the path to independent language participation in Germany.
The exam is organized by telc gGmbH, an experienced provider of language tests that cooperates with numerous language centers and educational institutions both in Germany and abroad. Telc certificates are internationally recognized and often part of integration or qualification programs.
The A2 Reading Exam is designed for:
The A2 exam proves that a person can handle basic everyday language tasks. In the reading comprehension section, this means understanding information needed in many everyday situations: a street sign, a message from friends, a simple newspaper article or an informational text.
The reading section takes about 30 minutes and generally consists of three task types:
Compared to the B1 Reading Exam, the language level at A2 is significantly simpler. Texts are shorter, vocabulary is more limited, and the questions are directly focused on text comprehension. While B1 requires more interpretation and understanding of context, A2 focuses on identifying and applying information from the text.
The A2 Reading Exam is assessed together with the other exam parts. To pass the overall test, candidates must achieve at least 50% in both written and oral sections. Reading comprehension contributes directly to the total score of the written portion.
Olena, the founder of this learning platform, has years of experience in developing preparation materials for German exams. She collaborates with native-speaking teachers and active examiners from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other countries.
"A common mistake is answering questions too quickly without truly understanding the text," says Olena. "I recommend asking yourself with each task: What is the main message of this text? And what is NOT being said?"
Language coach Julia L. from Munich adds: "Reading comprehension is best trained through daily reading of realistic text types. Official exams are often based on real ads, emails or public notices."
User feedback from Amir in Cologne: "The exercises on this page helped me really understand how the tasks work. The solutions and explanations were worth their weight in gold."
