The ÖIF A2 Reading Exam is an essential part of the A2-level German language test, offered by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF) as part of values and orientation knowledge and language support programs. This exam is especially aimed at people who want to integrate linguistically into everyday life in Austria and need official proof of their language skills.
The "Reading" module assesses whether candidates can understand simple, everyday texts. These include short notices, advertisements, directions, or brief messages. The goal is to verify that learners possess basic reading comprehension in typical real-life situations.
The exam is managed by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF), an institution commissioned by the Austrian federal government. The tests are conducted in cooperation with certified examination centers throughout Austria.
The ÖIF A2 Reading Exam is relevant for:
It serves as official language certification and is often required for legal processes such as permanent residency or citizenship. At the same time, it promotes independent participation in daily life — for example, understanding forms, schedules, messages, or workplace instructions.
The reading section of the A2 exam takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes. It typically includes:
Compared to the B1 version, the A2 exam is simpler in both language and structure. Texts are shorter, the language is clearer, and little background knowledge or interpretation is required. The B1 level, however, requires a deeper understanding of context and meaning.
The ÖIF A2 Reading Exam is part of the overall written assessment. To pass, candidates must achieve at least 50 percent in each section — reading, listening, and writing — with a minimum of 33 points overall. Evaluation is standardized to ensure fairness for all participants.
Olena, the founder and academic lead of this platform, has been supporting learners for many years on their journey to successful language certification. She collaborates with teaching professionals and examiners from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and beyond to develop realistic, exam-oriented practice materials.
“Many candidates make the mistake of answering too quickly when they see familiar words,” says Olena. “My recommendation: always read the question carefully first, then search the text specifically for supporting information. This helps avoid mistakes — especially with similar-looking answer options.”
Language coach Maria K. from Linz adds: “The best way to practice reading is with authentic text types like forms, emails, or classified ads — the kind of materials that actually appear in the exam.”
A test-taker from Graz reports: “The exercises on this website really helped me. I knew exactly how the exam worked and felt much more confident.”
