The A2-level listening comprehension exam is one of the key components of the official German language test at this level. Its main focus is to assess whether participants can understand short, everyday audio texts and extract essential information. Typical content includes announcements, dialogues, or simple messages, such as those heard in a supermarket, on public transport, or on the phone.
The Goethe A2 listening exam is developed and administered by the Goethe-Institut, a globally recognized institution known for its high-quality language tests and international standards. The exams are regularly conducted in certified testing centers and language schools around the world.
This test is aimed at individuals who:
The A2 listening module is designed to prove that participants can understand and respond to simple spoken information. This skill is essential for everyday situations such as making appointments, following directions, or understanding opening hours.
The listening section lasts about 20 to 25 minutes. It consists of several short audio texts, which are usually played twice. These include:
The task types range from multiple-choice to matching and identifying specific details.
Compared to the B1 version, the A2 module is much simpler. The speech is slower, the sentences are shorter and more straightforward. While B1 expects participants to grasp indirect messages or opinions, A2 focuses solely on extracting clear, explicit information.
The points earned in the listening section count towards the overall score of the written exam. To pass the A2 test, candidates must achieve at least 50% in both the written and oral sections. Half points are not awarded, and only fully correct answers are considered valid.
Olena, founder of this platform, has developed a wide range of online exercises and listening samples in collaboration with international German teachers and certified examiners. Her goal is to create realistic training situations that closely align with the structure of the A2 listening section.
“Many learners listen carefully but focus too much on individual words,” Olena explains. “My tip: always read the question carefully before listening. Then, on the second playback, focus specifically on the part of the audio that contains the answer. This reduces the risk of falling into common traps.”
Language expert Markus K. adds: “Practicing with authentic dialogues like those in the exam is especially effective. It’s even better if you work with transcripts — that way, you can compare what you understood with what was actually said.”
A course participant from Stuttgart reports: “I practiced with the listening exercises from this site and was surprised at how similar they were to the real tasks. The explanations after each audio made me feel more confident.”
On our platform, you’ll find many A2-level listening exercises, online tests, sample tasks, and transcripts — all tailored to the requirements of the Goethe A2 Listening Exam. This way, you can prepare step by step for success using real content and clear explanations.
