Additional Information about the Telc A1 Writing Exam

The written A1 exam by telc tests whether you are able to write simple texts in everyday situations – especially short letters, messages, or emails. This skill is particularly important if you want to live or work in Germany or successfully complete an integration course. The main focus is not only on correct use of vocabulary and grammar, but also on whether you understand the writing situation properly and convey the required information clearly and completely.

What does the writing task look like?

In the exam, you are given a specific situation. For example, you may need to write a letter to decline an invitation, ask for information, or reschedule an appointment. The task usually consists of three to four points, all of which must be covered in your text.

Your text should be between 30 and 50 words long. You will be assessed not only on language accuracy, but also on structure, completeness, and clarity.

Typical topics in the Telc A1 writing exam

  • Inviting someone to an event (e.g. birthday, wedding, barbecue)
  • Cancelling due to illness or scheduling issues
  • Asking about a language course, doctor’s appointment, or work schedule
  • Writing a message to neighbors or a school

What should your letter definitely include?

  • Clear sentence structure using simple verbs in the present tense
  • Polite greetings (“Dear Ms…”, “Hello Anna”) and suitable closing phrases (“Best regards”, “Sincerely”)
  • Logical order of content so the reader can follow your text easily
  • Correct spelling to avoid misunderstandings

How to prepare successfully

If you want to be well-prepared, we recommend the following steps:

  • Practice regularly with real example tasks from past exams
