The B1 reading exam as part of the Goethe Certificates is a central component of the German language exam for everyday life and work. It tests whether you are able to understand different types of texts, interpret information correctly, and evaluate statements from daily, professional, and public contexts. Many elements are similar to those in the Telc B1 reading exam, but they differ in structure and weighting.
The reading section consists of five different tasks based on real-life text types. These include advertisements, forum posts, emails, newspaper articles, and short notices. The exam lasts about 65 minutes. The goal is to understand overall meaning as well as detailed information.
All tasks test key reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, and detailed text comprehension within the context of a B1-level German exam.
Good preparation starts with targeted practice. On our platform, you will find numerous tasks with solutions and clear explanations. Our tests follow the structure of both official Goethe and Telc exams, making them ideal for independent preparation.
What makes our exercises special: they not only help you memorize correct answers, but also help you understand common mistakes and thought processes behind each task.
To prepare well, you should regularly read texts in German – ideally from different areas: job listings, private emails, online forums, information boards, or news articles. While practicing, pay close attention to common keywords, signal words, and what exactly is being asked. It is especially helpful to use tests that already come with solutions and explanations.
Olena Bazalukova is a certified German teacher and the founder of deutsch-vorbereitung.com. She personally created all exercises for the Goethe and Telc B1 reading exams or developed them together with experienced teachers and examiners. Her recommendation: “Many learners focus only on reading quickly and miss important details. My advice: take your time when practicing, carefully analyze each task, and consistently work with exercises that include both solutions and explanations. This way, you learn more efficiently and sustainably.”
Our platform stands for clear, practical, and exam-oriented preparation for all versions of the B1 reading exam – whether it’s for Goethe or Telc. This ensures you are well-prepared for your German exam.
Alex Aldikurz: „Excellent website for exam preparation! There’s a lot of material, and all the best is collected in one place. The only downside is that the names and numbers in the listening and writing sections are spoken too fast (for me). Still, definitely worth the money!“
Sara El Mounjali: „Good service“
Tabesh Shahrivar: „This is the best you can imagine!“
