What is a Goethe B1 model test?
A Goethe B1 model test simulates typical exam situations and follows the structure of the Goethe-Zertifikat B1. You read texts, listen to conversations and announcements, write responses and practise speaking tasks. This allows you to improve not only your German language skills but also your familiarity with the different exam task formats.
The difference between a model test and general B1 exercises lies in the exam format: you need to understand the instructions precisely, complete tasks within a set time and achieve specific communication goals in Writing and Speaking. A complete practice exam helps you train all these skills together.
Who is the Goethe B1 practice exam suitable for?
- Learners who want to check whether their German skills meet the B1 level.
- Anyone preparing for the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 who wants to become familiar with the exam format.
- People who need a B1 certificate for personal, professional or official purposes.
- Candidates who want to improve individual modules or simulate the entire exam.

Goethe B1 exam structure: Four independent modules
The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 consists of four modules: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Each module is independent and assessed separately. Unlike exams with a combined written score, the Goethe B1 requires you to pass each module individually.
Reading – five exam parts
In the Reading module, you complete 30 questions across five parts. You read different types of texts, such as personal messages, advertisements and informational texts, and decide which statements or answers are correct. You need to understand both the main message and important details.
Listening – four exam parts
In the Listening module, you answer 30 questions across four parts. You listen to conversations, announcements and discussions, among other recordings. Depending on the exam part, recordings are played once or twice. The key is to identify relevant information without needing to understand every single word.
Writing – three tasks
In the Writing module, you produce two longer texts and one short message: a personal email, a text expressing your opinion and a short formal email. Assessment focuses not only on grammar and vocabulary but also on completing the task fully and organising your text clearly.
Speaking – three exam parts
The oral exam consists of three tasks: planning something together, presenting a topic and discussing the topic. You need to make suggestions, interact with your partner, express your own experiences and opinions, and ask and answer questions.
How long does the Goethe B1 exam take?
When taking an online practice exam, it is worth following the official time limits. This helps you recognise early on whether you spend too much time on longer texts or leave enough time to review your writing.
| Module | Exam duration | What is tested? |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 65 minutes | Understanding texts and matching information |
| Listening | Approx. 40 minutes | Understanding spoken information |
| Writing | 60 minutes | Writing emails and an opinion text |
| Speaking | Approx. 15 minutes for two candidates | Planning, presenting and responding to questions |
| Speaking preparation | 15 minutes | Preparing tasks and making notes |
Make sure you allow time for all three Writing tasks. As a guide, you can spend around 20 minutes on Task 1, 25 minutes on Task 2 and 15 minutes on Task 3. The important thing is to complete all tasks within the total 60 minutes.
Goethe B1 scoring: How many points do you need to pass?
Each of the four modules is assessed on a scale from 0 to 100 points. You pass a module when you achieve at least 60 points. The results are not combined: a very good Reading score cannot compensate for a failed Listening module.
| Module | Maximum points | Minimum passing score |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 100 | 60 points |
| Listening | 100 | 60 points |
| Writing | 100 | 60 points |
| Speaking | 100 | 60 points |
For example, if you score 85 points in Reading, 57 in Listening, 75 in Writing and 80 in Speaking, you have failed only the Listening module. You can retake the failed module separately; generally, you do not need to retake modules you have already passed.
How are Reading and Listening assessed?
Both modules contain 30 questions each. Every correct answer earns one raw point, while incorrect or missing answers receive no points. The raw scores are then converted into final scores. With 18 correct answers, you reach the passing threshold of 60 points.
How are the three Writing tasks assessed?
A total of 100 points is available in the Writing module. Task 1 and Task 2 are worth up to 40 points each, while Task 3 is worth up to 20 points. Assessment criteria include task fulfilment, text coherence, vocabulary and language structures.
| Writing task | Text type | Maximum points |
|---|---|---|
| Task 1 | Personal email | 40 |
| Task 2 | Personal opinion / discussion post | 40 |
| Task 3 | Short formal email | 20 |
Assessment is not just about how many mistakes you make. Your text must also be appropriate for the situation, cover the required content and be easy for the reader to follow.
How are points awarded in Speaking?
You can also achieve a maximum of 100 points in the Speaking module. The assessment covers the three tasks as well as your pronunciation throughout the entire oral exam.
| Area | Maximum points |
|---|---|
| Part 1: Planning something together | 28 |
| Part 2: Presenting a topic | 40 |
| Part 3: Discussing a topic | 16 |
| Pronunciation (overall) | 16 |
| Total | 100 |
The examiners assess, among other things, whether you complete each task, communicate clearly with others, use appropriate vocabulary and apply grammatical structures correctly. You do not need a perfect accent to pass; what matters is clear, understandable pronunciation.
Common mistakes in the Goethe B1 model test – and how to avoid them
After the test, it is worth looking closely at individual tasks rather than focusing only on your score. Check which questions you found difficult and what slowed you down. You can then use these findings to plan specific exercises for your next study sessions.
- Translating every word while reading: Focus on the main message of the text and look specifically for the information needed to answer the question.
- Spending too long on one Reading question: Keep the 65-minute time limit in mind and return to difficult questions if you have time left.
- Trying to recover a missed answer in Listening: If you did not understand something, concentrate on the next piece of information instead of missing more answers.
- Leaving out required content in Writing: Highlight all the points you need to cover before writing and check at the end whether you have addressed them.
- Using an inappropriate greeting or closing phrase: Pay attention to whether you are writing to a friend or a formal contact.
- Writing only short, separate sentences: Connect your ideas clearly, for example with “weil”, “deshalb”, “aber” or “außerdem”.
- Only listing your own suggestions in Speaking Part 1: Respond to your partner, ask follow-up questions and develop a plan together.
- Forgetting a slide in Speaking Part 2: Prepare a clear sequence and cover all five presentation slides.
- Answering only “Ja” or “Nein” in Speaking Part 3: Add a short explanation or example and ask a relevant question yourself.
Record your results for Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking separately. Instead of repeating all the exercises at random, start with the modules and task types where you have the greatest potential for improvement. Repeat the model test later to check your progress.
