The speaking part "Talking about a Topic" in the Goethe B1 exam offers candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their communication skills in a realistic situation. They are required to give a short, structured, and clear presentation on a familiar topic. This task assesses how well participants convey information, express their personal opinion, and maintain linguistic clarity.
Candidates receive two topic options, from which they choose one. They then have about 30 seconds to prepare. Afterwards, they present the topic freely in their own words for one to two minutes. Often, a brief follow-up question from the examiner follows, which must be answered.
The topics relate to everyday life and areas of interest, such as:
Many candidates report feeling more confident with regular practice. “I prepared various topics and practiced with friends, which helped me a lot,” says Anna from Berlin. Jonas from Munich adds, “It is important to speak slowly and use simple sentences.”
Experienced language trainer Olena Bazalukova explains: “In the Goethe B1 part ‘Talking about a Topic,’ perfect grammar is not decisive, but a clear structure, understandable language, and a convincing presentation. Those who prepare well and practice with realistic topics can easily master this task.”
In summary, this exam part is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate language competence in a practical context. With targeted training, confidence and expressive ability significantly increase.
